Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Kansas City Concert reviews
Elton John: still got it!
"Mannheim Steamroller Christmas was a class act, far exceeding my expectations! I thoroughly enjoyed it. His voice was strong and awesome, even though he was not able to hit many of the high notes. He changed the song just enough to compensate, which was utterly amazing. His piano playing was quick and precise as always. I was thinking that due to his age, this show would be more mellow, but I was wrong. I wasn't sure what to expect of the acoustics due to the size of the arena, but the sound was amazing. He was so gracious in thanking everyone for coming and supporting him all the years, and said how much it meant to him. He also autographed many items for people by the stage. This was an incredible show!"
great entertainer
This is more like an acoustic venue at your local pub, but the guy is really, really good. He sings some Staind songs, but also ventures out into other covers and even some country. Just Mannheim Steamroller Christmas and his new buddy on backup instrument. Some people were rude to him in Detroit which was disappointing.
You will truly understand the range and talent of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas's singing capabilities like never before. If you are looking for a rock concert, don't attend this. Security should have hauled those guys off. The concert was excellent. He talks to the audience a lot and even takes requests. Mostly picked slow songs for this event.
Musical Mediocrity
The venue for this Christmas concert was all wrong. Perhaps the problem was the day of the week. Every seat should have been filled. Maybe a different day of the week, like Friday or Saturday night. The only publicity I have seen for this event was on PBS. The publicity for this event was poor.
After watching him on TV, the staging was disappointing. I love to watch his PBS specials which are on a grand scale with lighting and staging. They want to get dressed up in pretty clothes they don't wear often. When people go to the theater, they want to have a total sensory experience; they want to look at the stage and how the concert is presented in addition to hearing the music. Symphony Hall, Civic Center, Escondido Center for the Cultural Arts would work better for Mannheim Steamroller Christmas. The sports arena is not a beautiful venue; it is cold and impersonal. It would be more intimate in a smaller venue.
Why wasn't there any holiday music at the beginning of the holiday season? Why didn't he bring his Christmas special that was on PBS when he only comes to the States once a year? This concert did not live up to my expectations. I was looking forward to a concert similar to what I have become accustomed to watching on TV. No, I would not go to a Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert again. I would rather listen to it on PBS.
Not many people got up to dance. That might be one reason for having it at the Sports Arena.
Most people go to the theater to have an experience they don't have every day, to be uplifted in a way that everyday experience can't. So, when a classically trained artist comes to town, it should be a spectacular event. I didn't have this kind of experience, and I love opera, operetta, and classical music. San Diego doesn't even have a classical music radio station anymore.
The only good thing about the concert was the audience. He played encores for almost 45 minutes. They couldn't get enough of his music. A really beautiful venue would have made a real difference. Comfortable seating would have also made a difference. The orchestra was beautifully attired, and that was the only eye candy. Maybe you should ask Mannheim Steamroller Christmas how to publicize his concerts so that they reach a broader audience. The audience was mostly older people above 50. Maybe one thing that makes a difference has to be a broader selection of music appealing to all generations. He likes to do audience participation. The people weren't in the mood for dancing, but they might like participating in singing Christmas carols. He is a family guy, but there wasn't very much that would appeal to children or adolescents.
Bryan Adams is always spectacular
Every time I can make it happen, I will attend a Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert. Bryan, Keith, Gary, and Mickey always deliver a fun and entertaining night. Their appreciation for the audience is sincere, and they have tons of fun on stage. I have seen him more than a dozen times and will continue to search for opportunities to attend his shows. There is something amazing about an audience singing every word to most every song. Anytime that he brings a high energy, engaging show that makes you want to dance and sing-a-long. The friends I brought with me to this show had never seen him, and when we left, they said this was the best show ever!
